Contact Lens Types

Since a contact lens actually sits directly on your eye, the prescription for glasses is not always the same as it is for contacts. Our licensed Opticians will properly interpret your prescription and recommend the type of lens that is best suited to you. Lenses are available for spherical prescriptions, people with astigmatism and bifocal prescriptions. There are even lenses available for people who have astigmatism and need a bifocals.

Soft Spherical Lenses- Meaning there is no astigmatism correction required.  There are spherical lenses available for almost any spherical prescription.

Soft Toric Lenses- Toric lenses are designed to correct astigmatism. Toric lens options are available, even in extended range to accommodate most prescriptions. This type of lens is weighted in order to maintain a static position on the eye-this eliminates rotation or “swing” and provides the patient with clear stable vision.  Though toric lenses have a significantly positive success rate, not all astigmats are good candidates for soft toric lenses.

Soft Multifocal Lenses- Bifocal contact lenses are available! These contact lenses have zones for both distance and near to correction.  This type of lens allows us to accommodate presbyopic patients who require correction to see up close as well as in the distance. Soft multifocal lenses offer the patient a positive compromise, allowing them to function successfully without the need for glasses for upto 80% of their daily tasks.  Multifocal contact lenses that correct astigmatism are also currently available.

Cosmetic Contact Lenses- Cosmetic/coloured lens options are available in many different shades. Cosmetic lenses are also available in prescription.  Please note- when trying lenses prior to your purchase, the in store trials are non-prescription.  These are meant to view the colour only.  We will fit you with a clear soft lens to fine tune your prescripton and ensure proper visual acuity. Once your colour selection has been made, the lenses can be ordered to most spherical prescriptions.

Custom Contact Lenses
If you are unsuccessful with the widely available soft lenses on the market due to abnormal prescription, unusual ocular anatomy, and/or post-surgical results, custom soft lenses are also available. Please inquire with your Optician.

RGP Lenses- Rigid gas permeable lenses (RGP) are also known as hard contact lenses.  RGP’s can be used to correct irregularly shaped corneas, steep or flat corneas, high amounts of astigmatism, dry eye, post- LASIK patients and other patients with special needs.  RGP’s can also be used on anyone who is looking for a healthier alternative to soft lenses and is interested in full time wear.  Please inquire with your Optician if you are interested in this option to see if it could be right for you.  PLEASE NOTE: the fitting fee for RGP’s is $80 and is non-refundable.
